The 2,100 kilometre GSMA mHealth Grand Tour will begin in September. The team was selected from Etisalat staff in the UAE, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Tanzania following a series of assessments and tests.
“The candidates invited to the assessments performed excellently and it was extremely difficult to select our squad from such a pool of talent,” Abdulkarim Julfar, the Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat Group said. “I thank everyone who has participated in supporting this worthy initiative which is the first of its kind not just for the Etisalat Group but for our industry as a whole.”
Potential squad members were put through their paces in their home country and in the UAE with psychological and physical training and assessments. These included a cycle tour simulation on Yas Island’s Formula 1 Track in the summer heat, medical tests and cycle races through Cairo and downtown Islamabad.
“I think this is a great initiative for a noteworthy cause, especially because Pakistan has the seventh highest number of diabetics in the world. Therefore it’s very important to create awareness about this disease among our masses and what better way than this exciting cycling tour. ”said Salman Wassay, the Chief Commercial Officer of Ufone – an Etisalat company in Pakistan. He further added, “It is estimated that around 9.4 million people in our country are undiagnosed but have diabetes. Over Two-Thirds of All Tablets Shipped Last Quarter Were Android

Tablets on the market thumb Over Two Thirds of All Tablets Shipped Last Quarter Were Android
Continuing its dominance from smartphones, Android has certainly started to increase its lead drastically in the tablet market too.
According to a new report by Strategy Analytics, out of the 51.7 million tablets shipped in the last quarter, about 67% of tablets ran on Android OS. iOS-running iPads largely lagged competition at 28%.
Microsoft’s Windows-running tablets also saw an increase in their marketshare, making up for about 4.5% of the shipments in the last quarter.
By statistics, Android has made a mammoth leap from last year. In the same time period of 2012, Google and its OEMs had managed to attain a marketshare of 51.4% compared to Apple’s share of 47.2%. What’s critical here however, is that not only Apple’s marketshare, its sales dropped too, in Q2 of 2013 compared to 2012.
Overall, the tablet shipments of 36.2 million were substantially higher than the 24.6 million units shipped in the same quarter of the year before.
If you also combine the shipments of so-called “White-box” or the unbranded tablets, the sales reached a staggering 51.2 million units. While these figures definitely can’t match the sales of the smartphone market, these are certainly respectable in their own right.
More details in below table:

What is Cloud Gaming? Is It Any Good?

GetImage 1 What is Cloud Gaming? Is It Any Good?
Cloud Gaming is a new trend in gaming world that is getting a lot of heat by gamers. Why is it so? Well – for those who don’t know – Cloud gaming allows you to play those high graphical console games on a system that has regular or low specs and has internet connection which should be fast enough to get fluent gameplay out of the games.
Cloud gaming is not only limited to your PC’s but its also available for TV, Mac, smartphones and tablets. Which means you can run Just Cause 2, Split/Second, Assassins Creed Revelations or Sleeping Dogs like games on your iPhone, iPad, TV, Mac, Android phone or tablet which is just amazing because Mac users don’t get to play games that are made for Windows and other devices as they are usually not capable of handling such graphic loads.
Cloud gaming doesn’t require heavy specs for your computer which means you don’t need to buy expensive computers instead your normal work computer would get the job done. You don’t need to download or install those heavy games, no more booting of game that takes forever to setup and customize; plus no more errors that we usually come across and the need for countless software in order to run the game is simply gone.
Besides you get to save a lot of memory on your hard disk. For TV’s you need to buy a mini console that is needed to be hooked up with your TV and internet in order to run games.
The gamers can play games by installing client program that can access to cloud servers. The game actually runs on a remote server that streams the game on your device, while all the data and computer processing is done in the cloud. It’s just like viewing a video.
For cloud gaming you need at least 2 MB internet connection but 5 MB is recommended and higher would give you higher results.
Cloud gaming was first introduced by OnLive in 2009 by running Crysis over the net. A server that’s miles away running a high graphics game on a low end pc is just amazing. OnLive, though, had trouble earning money from cloud gaming as the number of customers were low and their heavy servers weren’t being fully utilized. But they’ve managed to get on their feet back by selecting a new CEO.
GetImage What is Cloud Gaming? Is It Any Good?
Cloud gaming phenomena is new, as mentioned above, and services are provided in just few countries plus hardcore gamers are not satisfied as the games get little scaled down to 720p which is good for a casual gamer but not for a hardcore gamer. But still a mobile processor playing a graphic-rich game is way better than playing angry birds on tablets and smartphones.
The idea of cloud gaming can surely takeover the console gaming if the games’ quality get better.
After cloud gaming no one would buy expensive devices, no one would buy physical copies of CD’s, no one will have to wait to get a new released titles, no one will be restricted to take their consoles or pc with them where ever they go as you can run these games on your mobile devices like tablets and smartphones.

GSM SIM Card is Finally Hacked, Puts 750 Million Users at Risk

SIM Card Hack GSM SIM Card is Finally Hacked, Puts 750 Million Users at Risk
The SIM was one of the few common things in tech which were considered impossible to hack. Until now. Karsten Nohl of Security Research Labs (based out of Germany) has finally got a way past the 56-digit unique code and found a simple process which leaves an estimated 750 million SIM cards at risk.
The research was done on a 1000 SIM cards and only the ones which were using the old DES (Data Encryption Standard) standard were found vulnerable. Cracking them is super-easy and takes just 2 minutes. A message is sent to the target SIM card while disguised as the carrier. In response, a message is received containing information needed to find a way past the 56-digit code or the digital key which can allow the hacker to take control of the target SIM.
After getting this information and taking control, the intruder can easily listen to your calls, send text messages and in short, have control over every form of data on your SIM card.
Mr. Nohl said:
“We can spy on you. We know your encryption keys for calls. We can read your S.M.S.’s. More than just spying, we can steal data from the SIM card, your mobile identity, and charge to your account.”
In all, about 25% of the SIM cards which were tested were found susceptible to such penetration. Newer technologies like NFC might be at risk too.
D.E.S. encryption, which is vulnerable to such hacks – is used on about half of the about six billion cellphones. Over the past decade, most operators have adopted a stronger encryption method, called Triple D.E.S., but many SIM cards still run the old standard.
The GSM Association hasn’t confirmed this just yet though as it will investigate the case first but if this, in any way is true, it will pose some serious threats to people using SIM card for much more complex purposes than calling and texting. Mobile payments that is.

Cybernet Starts Internship Program for Local Talent

clip image002 thumb Cybernet Starts Internship Program for Local Talent
Cybernet recently initiated its LINK Program that will offer project based internships to IT students this summer.
Cybernet claims that unlike other internship programs, LINK program is specifically designed to engage IT student’s/fresh graduates and offer them opportunities to work with new and emerging technologies.
According to Cybernet’s head of Human Capital Management (HCM), Mr. Yasir Ghaffar, “Students in Pakistan have vast potential and a passion for hard work, it is now up to organizations to give these students necessary opportunities to channel that passion and apply it towards understanding the dynamics of the professional world.”
It was on that note that Cybernet’s HCM department engaged placement offices of Karachi’s top IT universities and set up interviews with their leading talent.
Students were requested to identify their project of choice from a list of options provided. They were interviewed by the company’s leading technology experts. Top candidates were then chosen to represent their university at Cybernet.
Mr. Ghaffar said, “Though we were only able to offer a certain number of project based internships this summer, we met with many students who have exceptional talent and if provided an opportunity to learn, they would be a great asset to any organization.”

Facebook For Every Phone Gets Over 100 Million Users

Facebook For Every Phone Facebook For Every Phone Gets Over 100 Million UsersFacebook has announced that over 100 million people are using it’s “Facebook for every phone” app now. The app remains most popular in developing regions, where people still cling on to feature phones.
The service was launched in July 2011 and can run on almost 3000 different cheap handsets from virtually all manufacturers.
“In just two years, Facebook For Every Phone has successfully put Facebook into the hands of millions of people around the world with limited access to the Internet, giving them the power to connect and share,” says Ran Makavy, the Growth Manager at Facebook.
And while the feature phone users aren’t really great, untapped sources of money for Facebook, in the future, they might give the social network some chances as they’ll steadily get better means of connecting to the web.
The company however still finds it difficult to find a way to smartphones though where its Facebook Home was coldly received and the HTC First fared badly so that might still be worrying.

Huawei Accused of Spying for China by Former CIA Chief

Huawei thumb Huawei Accused of Spying for China by Former CIA ChiefFormer head of NSA and CIA, Michael Hayden has accused Huawei for spying for China, the country where it belongs. He detailed his views in an interview to the Australian Financial Review.
He said that the views were developed when Huawei was trying to make a mark on the American telecommunication market and presented a briefing paper. While it didn’t say anything wrong, it wasn’t enough to convince Hayden to grant Huawei the rights. He said that the burden was now on Huawei to prove that it isn’t on the wrong side.
“God did not make enough briefing slides on Huawei to convince me that having them involved in our critical communications infrastructure was going to be okay.
This is not blind prejudice on my part. This was my considered view based on a four-decade career as an intelligence officer.” Michael Hayden
Huawei, though has called the remarks “defamatory” and has asked for evidences. The company’s global cybersecurity officer, John Suffolk has denied saying: “Huawei meets the communication needs of more than a third of the planet and our customers have the right to know what these unsubstantiated concerns are. It’s time to put up or shut up.”
Security issues haven’t been a new issue for Huawei, as the company has had a long list history of lawsuits regarding it. In only 2012, it was declared by US as a “national security threat” and this latest incident of this line surely isn’t be doing its image any good.

Young Peshawar Boy Sentenced for Making Vulgar Video of a Girl

vulgar video thumb Young Peshawar Boy Sentenced for Making Vulgar Video of a GirlA young boy from Peshawar is sentenced for eight year in prison and a fine for making a vulgar video of his neighbouring girl.
This is first of its kind instance in KPK when a boy is sentenced for making vulgar pictures or video a girl.
According to details, an underage kid made a video of neighbouring young girl and blackmailed here for several months. He had a partner in crime, who is still missing but police is vigorously raiding for the recovery.
After blackmailing and abusing the girl for several months, both the culprits floated the video in market for greater damage to the girl.
Child Protection Commission of KPK said that due to unavailability of such laws, earlier these cases of making vulgar videos and photos of innocent girls were never heard in court or eventually sentenced. However, due to special law making and legislation, all such offenders will be put behind the jail.
It merits mentioning here that trend for making vulgar videos and pictures is on the rise. Young boys and girls readily get involved in vulgar film making of their private moments. These videos are sometimes intentionally released by the young kids or they accidentally fall into un-wanted hands, resulting into serious repercussions.
Anyone who has been victim of such cases can approach Child Protection Commission, which is already perusing various such cases in KPK.
