Motorola hinted that its relatively low-priced – i.e. under USD 200 – Moto X smartphones will be designed and priced to appeal to international customers in markets where people generally don’t buy subsidized devices.

“Moto X is the brand that we are most focused on,” Dennis Woodside, CEO Motorola Mobility, said. “And there is more to come. You will see additional products within months. The experience of devices you can get for less than $200 is subpar right now. We want everyone to have access to affordable smartphones.”

While he didn’t reveal the date of the phone’s release, it should hit the market later this year. Woodside made it clear that that product will be targeted towards prepaid markets. That’s undeniably important for Motorola which is currently bleeding money at an alarming pace.

Google Reveals the Motorola Moto X

Google’s acquisition of Motorola happened quite a lot of time ago and nothing serious had been achieved from the partnership yet, but the two companies have finally done something unique with the Moto X. The much-hyped smartphone is not the most high-end smartphone you’ll see but is undoubtedly the most customizable.

To start with, the Moto X comes with a 4.7 inch AMOLED display with 720p HD resolution. The reason why the flagship-norm 1080p wasn’t chosen was because “it would just suck the battery and nobody would know the difference”. That’s right to some extent, especially since anything more than 300ppi is useless. It is protected by a new breed of Gorilla Glass dubbed “Magic Glass” and is a bit curved on its edges.

Under the hood, the phone packs a Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 Pro SoC, dual-core 1.7Ghz Krait CPU and Adreno 320 GPU. Motorola’s new power-efficient X8 chip is also there. The amount of RAM in the phone is 2 GB and the storage capacity will be 16 or 32 gigs, non-expandable.

The back boasts a 10 megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video at 30fps, LED Flash and HDR. A 2 megapixel Full HD camera is at the front too. Talking of fronts and backs, the phone is really customizable.

Firstly, the phone is made of high-quality plastic. The back is curved which makes the Moto X fairly usable with one hand. It’s 10.4mm at its thickest point and 5.4mm on the edges. It weighs 130g.

The phone’s front panel is either black or white but the back comes in a mind-blowing range of 18 colors. Three special versions made of wood will be available later. The further customizations are done via the Moto Maker site. You can also customize the accent colors and the color of the charger & NFC speaker there. Overall, 2000 customizations can be made with Moto Maker.

But wait, the software is also a beneficiary here. You’ll be able to choose the color of the phone’s wallpaper and add your Google ID via Moto Maker. Still, if you don’t like the end result much, Google will also replace your phone within 2 weeks. The service won’t be available until next year though.

Government Plans to Open YouTube After Eid

Government of Pakistan is making efforts to lift YouTube ban after Eid-ul-Fitr, reported Express Tribune.

Paper, on its website, said that Anusha Rehman, Telecom and IT Minister, has formed a committee to review the matter of lifting ban on YouTube. Committee is directed to somehow make sure that all the objectionable material is blocked or made inaccessible in Pakistan.

However, it is still unclear that how future-duplication of objectionable content will be blocked.

It merits mentioning here that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has already expressed its inability to block objectionable content.

On other hands, Google has also not responded to Pakistan’s request of blocking objectionable content in the country, like it has done for various other regions.

Now government has hinted that it may open YouTube in Pakistan after making sure the blockade of all objectionable material, without mentioning the methods it intend to use for blocking the content.

Government said that all stakeholders will be taken into confidence before reopening the website.

Google Announces the new Nexus 7, Quad-Core, HD Screen for $230

The original Google Nexus 7 was unarguably one of the most widely acclaimed gadgets of 2012. Among the numerous reasons of its success, was the fact that it came at a price tag which made it accessible to almost everybody.

Now, after one year, Google has made the successor to the Nexus 7 official. The new Nexus 7 comes with several new, important features, including a better and more portable design, better internals, a hugely-better display and rear-camera.

To be honest, a rear-camera on a tablet doesn’t make much sense but its definitely better than having nothing at all.

The tablet is also much more portable. Its a full 50g lighter and 1.8mm thinner than last year’s offering. The bezels are also trimmed down by 2.75mm.

The new Nexus 7 is a bit pricier compared to the last year’s offering. The 16 GB version costs $230 now while the 32 GB is available for $270. That’s more expensive compared to last year’s tablets which costs $200 (8 GB) and $250 (16 GB). But you simply can’t ignore the fact that this year’s models come with twice the storage capacity, much, much better power under the hood and a monumentally better display. And because of these, the price difference is more than justified.

The new Nexus 7 will hit the markets worldwide in the starting of the next month. The best all-round 7 inch slate on the market just got even better!

At its announcement, Google called the original Nexus 7 the tablet which started the domination of Android in the tablet scene. Will the new Nexus 7 turn that domination into an undisputed lead until the arrival of its successor? That remains to be seen.

Google Announces Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

Google has finally taken the curtains off the latest offering of its mobile OS. Some people might’ve been left disappointed again by Google’s reluctance to announce Key Lime Pie immediately but the new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean isn’t bad by any standards.

The update is largely an incremental one, which brings some performance improvements, alongside some software enhancements.

Here are the most-important features which the update brings:

Multiple-users and restrictions

The ability to make multiple profiles in a single device is a feature already brought in the previous versions of Android but Google has added the feature to restrict the “rights” of any particular profile just now. This is a bit similar to the Kid’s Corner in Windows Phone and here too you can select only a number of apps/features which can be accessed by the profile being restricted.

Different users can also make different environments with their respective widgets, homescreens and customizations.

Better notifications

Android 4.3 brings the ability to view your notifications history. Apps, accessories and games can now take even better control over your notification bar now and can be sent to other paired devices from there.

OpenGL ES 3.0

Android 4.3 brings support for OpenGL ES 3.0 graphics which will be great for games as it improves details. It brings much more complexity in both 2D & 3D (Google also demonstrated this at its event) and adds a real depth to the whole experience.

Things much more complex than Real Racing are coming soon. This feature will be available on the new Nexus 7, Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 as of now.

Low Energy Bluetooth mode and AVRCP

Bluetooth Smart is a new feature which interacts with accessories and will use the same technology to conserve the battery. Also added is Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 which sends additional information to the audio device paired with your phone.

Better performance

Performance has been Android’s Achilles Heels but Google hasn’t made a secret that it has waged a war against it. The performance enhancements which were brought in Jelly Bean are built upon here. Vsync, touch latency, CPU input boosts, and others will make working on the OS smoother than before.

The rendering performance across various fronts have been improved drastically too.

Support for RTL Languages, Keyboard

Android 4.3 also brings support for languages which are written from right-to-left. The notifications bar, dialpad and lists, all are reworked for these specific keyboards. That will also be supported by a lot of pre-installed apps. Unfortunately, this is not available for Urdu yet but hopefully that will change in the future.

Emoji Keyboard also comes along with the system now and is activated by a long press on the spacebar key.

Software additions

Google is adding a Google Play Games app from Android 4.3 onwards which is a bit like Apple’s Game Center, where you have a leaderboard showing yours and your friend’s progress and the achievements you have accomplished.

Google Keep is yet another app which will be coming pre-installed and Hangouts will be replacing Talk officially. Several new additions like a separate menu for your disabled apps have been added as well.

Convenience for developers

Android 4.3 brings great convenience for developers. Apart from OpenGL ES, it also brings a vastly better Systrace tool which will give the developers an even better idea of their app’s performance.

When will it roll out?

The new Android 4.3 is already being rolled out to the Nexus 10, Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus and the original Nexus 7 worldwide. Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Editions will follow later. Other phones not running on stock-Android will be receiving the update through their respective manufacturers in the coming few months.

Android version 4.3 is a great step forward for both users and developers. Features like OpenGL ES don’t only open new doors for app-developers, but also make sure that users will get even better stuff in the future.
