Pak-China Optic Fiber Link to Get Completed in 2 years for $44 Million

Pak China Fiber Optic thumb Pak China Optic Fiber Link to Get Completed in 2 years for $44 MillionMore details of Pakistan-China Optic Fiber project have surfaced with an unnamed source working at Huawei got in touch with APP, a state run Pakistani news agency.
According to the details that were revealed to the agency, the Optic-Fiber project is going to cost US 44 million dollars and is going to get completed in two years after commencement of work.
Huawei is going to lay-down this 820 kilometer long fiber optic to link Rawalpindi with Khunjarab and then onwards to China’s back-haul network.
The climatic conditions warrant initiation of project from Sust to Khunjrab section on top priority due to a very limited time-period left available in summer the year.
However, other than this section, the project will be executed simultaneously in different sections (cities/towns).
With this new link, Pakistan is going to enjoy the redundant internet voice and data connectivity through China. Country is currently severed with spurs through undersea cables namely SEA-ME-WE 3&4 and IMEWE.
This dependency is not only a risk but also entails security concerns, noted APP. The voice/data and internet traffic can be monitored and disturbed easily. To offset such a threat, through this project, a link will be created between Pakistan and Trans-Asia Europe (TAE) cable in China, which would enable both Pakistan and China to have alternative routes for their international telecom traffic,” said the report citing its source.

Intel Hopes Your Ultrabook Will Soon Wirelessly Charge Your Nearby Smartphone

intel-logo
While you can plug a USB cable into your notebook or Ultrabook today to charge your smartphone, Intel is hoping to cut out the cable in the future by allowing your Intel-powered laptop to wirelessly charge nearby devices.
The chip-maker has joined the Alliance for Wireless Power, or A4WP, to back that consortium’s wireless charging standard, which
rivals standards being promoted by Power Matters Alliance and the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi. The three wireless charging standards will be battling it out to see which will become the de facto wireless standard for consumer electronics in the future.
Along with Intel, A4WP also is backed by Qualcomm, Samsung, Broadcom, and other players while the Power Matters Alliance is being supported by AT&T Mobility, BlackBerry, Samsung, HTC, and LG among others.“Intel believes the A4WP specification, particularly the use of near-field magnetic resonance technology, can provide a compelling consumer experience and enable new usage models that make device charging almost automatic,” Intel general manager Navin Shenoy said in a prepared statement.“In joining A4WP, we look forward to working alongside other member companies and contributing to standards that help fuel an ecosystem of innovative solutions capable of simultaneously charging a range of devices, from low-power accessories to smartphones, tablets and Ultrabooks.”In a post on ZDNet, the publication says that Intel wants to leverage the wireless charging capabilities not only to wirelessly charge Ultrabooks and laptops, but to also use Ultrabooks as a charging plate so that the notebook could provide wireless charging to nearby tablets and smartphones. This may help to eliminate the clutter of wires that many tech travelers carry with them while working remotely.Whatever the case is, wireless charging probably will remain confusing for some time to come until there’s a clear winner. Right now, competing standards make accessories and charging plates incompatible. For example, the Nexus 4′s wireless charging capabilities cannot interact with accessories made for the Nokia Lumia range.

A New Wi-Fi-Enabled Tooth Sensor Rats You Out When You Smoke or Overeat

Image: National Taiwan University
Lying through your teeth just took on a whole new meaning. Cigarettes, drinking, eating too much or too little food—we all have our vices, and vices are hard to drop. When, say, New Years rolls around, it’s easy to make promises to cut them out with no intention of following through.
That’s why this new invention, a wi-fi-enabled tooth sensor, is so intriguing. Researchers at National Taiwan University have created a tooth-embedded sensor that will catch you in an unhealthy act, whatever it may be, and lets your doctor know so he can shame you during your next checkup. The sensor consists of a tiny circuit that fits inside a tooth cavity and can be rigged into dentures and dental braces. The circuit is able to recognize the jaw motions of drinking, chewing, coughing, speaking, and smoking, and the results get sent directly to your doctor’s smartphone.
To test the prototype, Hao-hua Chu and his team at the university secured the sensor into eight people, and the results were promising. Although the prototype is hooked up to an external wire, the sensor correctly identified oral activities and motions 94% of the time. The next step will be installing a rechargeable internal battery and wireless communication. Researchers are also looking into constructing a recharging and storage unit “similar to that of an electric toothbrush,” since some users must remove artificial teeth before sticking the sensor in.
“Because the mouth is an opening into human health, this oral sensory system has the potential to enhance exiting oral-related healthcare monitoring applications such as dietary tracking,” the study says.
Safety is still a big concern, though. The prototype needed to be attached to a tether so participants don’t swallow the device, and so the electronics remain intact when wet. A Bluetooth radio is also on the list of things to add, and can make it easier for researchers and doctors to keep tabs on the results.
"This could have a number of uses in dentistry, for example as a research tool, for monitoring patients who clench or grind their teeth, and for assessing the impact of various dental interventions,” Trevor Johnson, vice-chair of research at the Faculty of General Dental Practice, told New Scientist.
If the sensor gets all the appropriate adjustments, it has the potential to curb all kinds of addictions. One of them is smoking. In 2011, 43.8 million American were smokers, according tostatistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — and that number just includes adults. Each day in the United States, nearly 4,000 people under 18 try their first cigarette, and almost 1,000 become daily smokers. But a staggering 69% of these smokers are looking for a way to quit completely. This new sensor could help.
The research will be presented at the International Symposium on Wearable Computers in September. Until then, maybe it’s time to try stopping your bad habits yourself.

Over Two-Thirds of All Tablets Shipped Last Quarter Were Android

Tablets on the market thumb Over Two Thirds of All Tablets Shipped Last Quarter Were Android
Continuing its dominance from smartphones, Android has certainly started to increase its lead drastically in the tablet market too.
According to a new report by Strategy Analytics, out of the 51.7 million tablets shipped in the last quarter, about 67% of tablets ran on Android OS. iOS-running iPads largely lagged competition at 28%.
Microsoft’s Windows-running tablets also saw an increase in their marketshare, making up for about 4.5% of the shipments in the last quarter.
By statistics, Android has made a mammoth leap from last year. In the same time period of 2012, Google and its OEMs had managed to attain a marketshare of 51.4% compared to Apple’s share of 47.2%. What’s critical here however, is that not only Apple’s marketshare, its sales dropped too, in Q2 of 2013 compared to 2012.
Overall, the tablet shipments of 36.2 million were substantially higher than the 24.6 million units shipped in the same quarter of the year before.
If you also combine the shipments of so-called “White-box” or the unbranded tablets, the sales reached a staggering 51.2 million units. While these figures definitely can’t match the sales of the smartphone market, these are certainly respectable in their own right.

Sony and Panasonic Join Hands to Launch a 300 GB Optical Disc

Optical Disk Sony and Panasonic Join Hands to Launch a 300 GB Optical Disc
How much storage do we really need? That’s a question Sony and Panasonic are asking right now. If you are one of those rare people who find Blu-rays insufficient and DVDs completely unacceptable then you’ll probably be thrilled by this news: both the companies have partnered together to create CDs with incredibly-high storage capacities – 300 GB to be honest.
The Optical Disc should be released in 2015. The new format will of course be targeted towards businesses and other professionals, who’ll need modes for backing-up the data. We already know some formats which have the capability to hold data of up to 1 terabyte. Compared to that, the dual-layer Blu-ray discs of today can hold data of up to 50 GB.
And while the idea sounds pleasing, will the new product take over the market in 2015? Considering the fact that most of the biggest tech companies including Microsoft, Google and Apple are moving towards cloud solutions and storage options, the idea of going back to the CD might feel absurd 2 years later.
Also, the pricing will be an issue as the optical disc’s price might be a bit tough to swallow for some, and might even be more-expensive than cloud storage. These issues need to be addressed if the product has to go mainstream, esp. in 2015.

Cybernet Starts Internship Program for Local Talent

clip image002 thumb Cybernet Starts Internship Program for Local Talent
Cybernet recently initiated its LINK Program that will offer project based internships to IT students this summer.
Cybernet claims that unlike other internship programs, LINK program is specifically designed to engage IT student’s/fresh graduates and offer them opportunities to work with new and emerging technologies.
According to Cybernet’s head of Human Capital Management (HCM), Mr. Yasir Ghaffar, “Students in Pakistan have vast potential and a passion for hard work, it is now up to organizations to give these students necessary opportunities to channel that passion and apply it towards understanding the dynamics of the professional world.”
It was on that note that Cybernet’s HCM department engaged placement offices of Karachi’s top IT universities and set up interviews with their leading talent.
Students were requested to identify their project of choice from a list of options provided. They were interviewed by the company’s leading technology experts. Top candidates were then chosen to represent their university at Cybernet.
Mr. Ghaffar said, “Though we were only able to offer a certain number of project based internships this summer, we met with many students who have exceptional talent and if provided an opportunity to learn, they would be a great asset to any organization.”
